How to use the Word Descrambler

Enter the letters you have available and select the shortest word you want to find. The descrambler will search for British English words that can be made using those letters.

1. Type your scrambled letters into the Letters box.
2. Use a question mark for each unknown or blank letter.
3. Choose the minimum word length.
4. Optionally specify a letter that every result must contain.
5. Select Find Words to see the available results.

Results are arranged by word length, with the longest words shown first.

Example

Entering LISTEN finds six-letter words including:

• ENLIST
• INLETS
• LISTEN
• SILENT
• TINSEL

Shorter words that can be made from the same letters are displayed underneath.

Using blank or unknown letters

Enter a question mark whenever one of your letters is unknown or can represent any letter.

For example:

TRA?N

The question mark may be replaced by any letter that produces a valid result. Each question mark can only represent one letter.

British English words and spellings

British Wordsmith is designed around British English rather than relying solely on an American word list. Results can include traditional British spellings and accepted Oxford spelling variants.

Examples include:

• COLOUR rather than only COLOR
• ORGANISE as well as the Oxford variant ORGANIZE
• THEATRE rather than only THEATER
• TRAVELLING with the British double L

Tips for finding the best words

• Start with the full set of available letters.
• Look at the longest results first.
• Reduce the minimum length if too few words are found.
• Use Must Contain when a particular letter needs to appear.
• Check that repeated letters have been entered the correct number of times.
• Use a question mark when working with a blank tile.

Frequently asked questions

Does every entered letter have to be used?

No. The descrambler finds words that use some or all of the available letters. Longer results will usually use more of them.

Can a letter be used more than once?

Only when that letter appears more than once in the entered letters, or when an available question mark can provide the additional occurrence.

What does the Must Contain option do?

It limits the results to words containing the specified letter. This is useful when solving word games with a required central or connecting letter.

Are proper names included?

No. The results concentrate on ordinary English words rather than people, places, abbreviations or trademarks.

Are all results accepted in every word game?

No. Individual games and competitions may use their own approved word lists. British Wordsmith provides British English word suggestions, not official tournament adjudication.
