How to use the Scrabble Word Finder

Enter the letters on your tile rack to find British English words that can be made from them. Results are ordered by their calculated base tile score, with the highest-scoring possibilities shown first.

1. Enter up to seven rack letters.
2. Use a question mark for each blank tile.
3. Optionally enter one existing board letter that your word must use.
4. Choose the minimum word length.
5. Select Find Playable Words.

Finds seven-letter possibilities including:

• ANTSIER
• NASTIER
• RATINES
• RETAINS
• RETINAS
• RETSINA
• STAINER
• STEARIN

Each of these uses all seven rack tiles and therefore receives the calculated seven-tile bonus.

Using a blank tile

Enter a question mark for a blank tile. The blank may represent any letter required to form a word.

For example:

RETA?NS

The question mark can provide the missing letter. Because blank tiles have no letter value, the substituted letter contributes zero points to the calculated score.

Using a joining board letter

The optional Joining Board Letter represents one existing tile that your new word must cross or extend.

The solver combines that board letter with your rack when searching, but requires the resulting word to contain the joining letter.

This is useful when you have identified a promising letter on the board but have not yet chosen a word.

Understanding the scores

The displayed scores use standard English tile values. A 50-point bonus is added when all seven rack tiles are used.

The calculation does not include:

• Double-letter squares
• Triple-letter squares
• Double-word squares
• Triple-word squares
• Scores created by additional crossing words

Your final board score may therefore be considerably higher than the figure displayed by the finder.

Tips for finding stronger words

• Check the seven-letter results for a bonus opportunity.
• Look for high-value letters such as J, Q, X and Z.
• Use the joining-letter option to explore available board positions.
• Try a shorter minimum length when searching for tight spaces.
• Remember that a short word on premium squares can outscore a longer word.
• Check whether a result creates useful parallel or crossing words.

British English word coverage

The finder uses the British Wordsmith English word collection. It includes British spellings, accepted Oxford variants, inflected forms and less common vocabulary encountered in word games.

It is not an official competition word list. Individual games, applications, clubs and tournaments may apply different rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use every rack letter?

No. The finder displays words using some or all of the available letters, subject to your selected minimum length.

Can I enter more than one blank tile?

Yes. Enter one question mark for each blank tile. Each question mark can replace one missing letter.

Why does a blank tile reduce the score?

A blank represents a letter but carries no point value. The finder correctly deducts the value of letters supplied by blanks.

Does the score include board bonuses?

No. Only base tile values and the seven-tile bonus are calculated. Apply board premiums after choosing the word and its position.

Are all results officially acceptable?

Not necessarily. British Wordsmith provides British English candidates rather than official adjudication. Check the rules and approved dictionary used by your particular game.
