How to use the Wordle Solver

- Enter green letters in their confirmed positions.
- Use a question mark for every unknown position.
- Enter yellow letters beneath the positions where they were tried.
- Enter grey letters that are not present in the answer.

What the colours mean
- Green: the letter is correct and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter appears in the answer but is currently in the wrong position.
- Grey: the letter does not appear in the answer, subject to the repeated-letter rule.

Suppose your previous guesses show that the final four letters are O, U, S and E, but the first letter remains unknown.

Entering yellow letters
A yellow letter must appear somewhere in the answer, but not in the position where it was previously tried.
The five yellow boxes correspond to the five positions in the word. Enter each yellow letter beneath the position where it appeared.
For example, if R was yellow in the second position, enter R in yellow box 2. The solver will require an R elsewhere while rejecting words with R in the second position.
If several guesses produced yellow letters in the same position, enter all those letters in the corresponding box.
Entering grey letters
Enter letters shown as grey into the Grey Letters field. Words containing those letters will be removed from the results.
You may type the letters together or separate them with spaces. The solver will clean the entry automatically.
Repeated letters
Repeated letters require a little care. A guess can show one occurrence of a letter as green or yellow while another occurrence appears grey.
In that situation, the letter exists in the answer, but fewer times than it appeared in the guess. Do not treat the letter as completely excluded if another occurrence was green or yellow.
Tips for narrowing the answer
- Enter every confirmed green letter first.
- Record the original position of each yellow letter accurately.
- Add all genuinely excluded grey letters.
- Use guesses containing several new letters when many possibilities remain.
- Check repeated letters carefully before excluding them.
- Prefer common words when several unusual possibilities remain.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the solver only use five-letter words?
The application is designed specifically for five-letter colour-feedback word puzzles.
Does the solver select the official daily answer?
No. It filters British English words using the information you provide. It does not access or reveal an official answer list.
Why are there still many possible words?
There may not yet be enough green, yellow or grey information. Add the results from another guess to reduce the list.
Can the results include British spellings?
Yes. British Wordsmith uses a British English word list, including traditional and accepted Oxford spelling variants.
Is British Wordsmith connected with the official Wordle game?
No. British Wordsmith is an independent word-solving website and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of Wordle.
