These Terms of Use apply to BritishWordsmith.com and its word-solving tools. British Wordsmith is operated by Outsourced AV Ltd.
By using the website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the website.
About British Wordsmith
British Wordsmith provides word-solving, vocabulary and puzzle tools using British English word data. Features include word descrambling, crossword assistance, five-letter word solving, word-game assistance, daily anagrams and word-list exploration.
The website is provided primarily for entertainment, education and general word-game assistance.
Permitted use
You may use British Wordsmith for lawful personal, educational and ordinary word-game purposes.
You must not:
- Use the website for unlawful, fraudulent or malicious purposes
- Attempt to bypass security, access controls or usage restrictions
- Interfere with the operation, availability or security of the website
- Introduce malware, automated attacks or harmful code
- Use bots, scraping tools or automated systems to extract substantial quantities of words, results or website content
- Copy, republish, sell or commercially exploit the word database or substantial parts of the website without permission
- Reverse engineer or attempt to reproduce protected parts of the website or its tools except where applicable law expressly permits it
- Use the contact form to send spam, abuse, threats or unlawful material
We may restrict or block activity that threatens the website, places an unreasonable burden on its systems or breaches these terms.
Accuracy of results
We aim to provide useful and accurate word results, but no word list is perfect or universally accepted.
Results may include uncommon, archaic, regional, technical or inflected words. A word appearing in British Wordsmith does not guarantee that it will be accepted by a particular game, competition, school, publisher or dictionary.
You should check the official rules and authorised dictionary used by the relevant game or competition.
No guarantee of availability
British Wordsmith is provided on an “as available” basis. We may change, suspend, restrict or withdraw any feature without notice.
We do not guarantee that the website will always be available, uninterrupted, secure or free from errors. Maintenance, hosting faults, security incidents and circumstances outside our control may affect availability.
Intellectual property
Except for third-party materials and licensed word data, the British Wordsmith name, logo, website design, written content, software, tool presentation and original materials belong to Outsourced AV Ltd or its licensors.
You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, sell or commercially exploit these materials without prior written permission, except for limited use permitted by law.
Dictionary acknowledgement
Word data used by British Wordsmith is derived from the English Speller Database, formerly known as SCOWL, maintained by Kevin Atkinson.
ESDB copyright © 2000–2026 Kevin Atkinson. The database is used and adapted under the ESDB licence. The word list used by British Wordsmith has been filtered for British-English word-solving applications.
ESDB and its contributors provide the database without warranty. British Wordsmith and Outsourced AV Ltd are solely responsible for the operation, filtering and presentation of the word-solving tools.
Third-party games and trademarks
Names of games, television programmes, dictionaries, publishers and other third-party products may be mentioned descriptively to explain possible uses of the tools.
All third-party names, brands and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Unless expressly stated otherwise, British Wordsmith is independent and is not affiliated with, authorised by, sponsored by or endorsed by those owners.
In particular, British Wordsmith is not an official Scrabble, Wordle or Countdown product and is not affiliated with their respective owners, publishers, broadcasters, producers or rights holders.
Advertisements and external services
The website may display advertisements supplied by Google AdSense or other advertising providers. An advertisement does not constitute an endorsement by British Wordsmith or Outsourced AV Ltd.
The website may also contain links to external websites. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, security, content or privacy practices of websites operated by other organisations.

Limitation of liability

- A word being rejected by a game, competition or other service
- Loss of scores, progress, streaks, favourites or locally stored settings
- Loss caused by interruption, incompatibility or temporary unavailability
- Loss caused by third-party advertisements, services or external websites
- Indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the free website
Nothing in these terms affects legal rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the website, its services or applicable requirements change. The revised terms will appear on this page with an updated revision date.
Continued use of the website after revised terms are published constitutes acceptance of those revised terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
